How Social Media Has Changed

And So Must We

Social Media Has Changed, And So Must We

The game isn’t the same anymore.
Everyone has access to AI. Everyone can write a decent caption, draft a tight parable, or pump out ten posts before lunch. The baseline has risen. Good is no longer good enough.

If you want to stand out today, you need something rarer: difference.

After all, there are really only two types of business models, the cost leader and the differentiator. There is nothing else. So, unless you’re willing to be the cheapest option in the market, you must differentiate.

AI can give you flawless phrasing, but it can’t give you purpose. That’s your job. Posting just to “stay active” is over. Every post needs intention—teach something, shift a mindset, spark action, challenge an assumption, tell a real story.
If it doesn’t matter, it won’t land.

This is where purpose-driven marketing steps in.

Being human (actually human) now matters more than ever. Personality. Consistency. Engagement. The opposite of “set it and forget it.” You can’t automate showing up. And while this strategy won’t drop leads in your lap overnight, it will build trust over months and years. The kind of trust competitors can’t copy-paste.

Humans still respond to signals.

Signal Theory (or “flexing”) says we’re constantly signalling who we want others to believe we are—not always who we actually are. And your organization is doing this every day online, intentionally or not. The tone you use, the stories you tell, the people you highlight, the comments you reply to (or don’t), all of it paints a picture of your brand.

So if social media has changed, the real question is:
What signals are you sending?

And more importantly…
Do they reflect who you truly want to be?

The Signals Your Social Media Sends (Whether You Mean To or Not)

Every organization is broadcasting signals online. Not intentionally, not maliciously, just naturally. And those signals shape what people think your brand is.

Look at the local burger joint with the scrappy, lovable social feed.
Their posts aren’t perfect. The lighting’s a bit off. The captions feel like a real human typed them during the lunch rush. But the vibe?
Authentic. Confident. Competent. Trusted.
People assume they know what they’re doing because the signal they send is: “We care. We’re here. We’re real. And we’re damn good at this.”

Now flip it.

You’ve seen the organizations with immaculate, agency-level videos—polished enough for a Super Bowl commercial—but online? Crickets.
Little engagement. No conversation. No spark.

That silence is a signal too:
“We don’t understand how people actually behave online.”

Because quality isn’t the differentiator anymore, connection is.

To succeed today, you have to be on the pulse of your audience.
You must understand what works on social… and what absolutely doesn’t.

The Hardest Question Most Teams Never Ask

How often have you had an honest, roll-up-your-sleeves conversation about your online presence?

  • What’s actually working?
  • What isn’t?
  • And most importantly…What are we changing or stopping?

It’s always easy to add things:

“Let’s get on TikTok!”
“Let’s do YouTube!”
“Let’s Snap some chat!”
“Let’s post more!”

But the hard, and far more strategic, move is subtraction. Remember the Harvard Business Professor Michael Porter’s haunting words of wisdom:

“The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do.”

The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do

Saying things like:
• “We don’t have time to engage on X anymore. Let’s sunset it.”
• “Let’s focus our energy on Facebook and Instagram.”
• “YouTube? We’ll use it as a content library to support our website, blogs, and newsletter.”

That is clarity.
That is maturity.
That is signal management.

Welcome to the Age of Word of Mouse

One click.
One share.
One comment.
One tiny moment online can reshape how people see you.

Social media has changed, and the signals you send matter more than ever.
So the real question is:

Are you controlling the signal…
or is the signal controlling the story people tell about you?

The Stratlab team has been fantastic. In the last 2 years Stratlab has helped us to overhaul our website. I am not a tech person, but in working with Carter, Dustin, or Brandon, bit-by-bit we've been able to revolutionize our Events Guide from what it previously was. With pretty much every idea I've had, some I didn't even know if they were technically possible, these wizards have found a way to make them happen. They are also usually super quick to make requested changes or fix any weirdness that may arise. We've had one of the best-looking and most user-friendy tourism Events Guides in the country that even our residents are getting excited about using! You can tell these guys are passionate about their work and care about getting their customers exactly what they need & want. I'm sad that I'll no longer be working with this crew due to transitioning to another department at work, but I highly recommend the Strat Lab team for any web design project 👍👍

I recently had the privilege of working with Brandon at StratLab, and the quality of his work is truly next‑level. After one quick call to share my vision for a bat demo video, he understood exactly what I needed, and delivered something far beyond what I imagined. His attention to detail, creative precision, and top‑tier expertise show what real professionalism looks like. Every frame, every transition, every moment was crafted with intention. He respected timelines, communicated clearly, and made the entire process effortless. I can only hope to work with Brandon again.
