7 Lessons from Derek Sivers’

7 Lessons from How to Live by Derek Sivers

How to live by derek siversA big thanks to Amanda G for the book recommendation, it was a treat!

Now, you won’t agree with everything Derek writes; that’s the best part of his writing. You completely disagree on one page and turn to the next, and he hits a point home that has you screaming, “YEAH YOU DID!”

I enjoy most of the books this individual has written, and this one is no exception.

1. “The pursuit of mastery”

It’s the never-ending path with no final boss fight.

  • Mastery isn’t about arriving—it’s about becoming. It’s humbling and motivating at once.
  • Derek Sivers’ framing says: forget perfection, just keep getting better in public.
  • Perfect for lifelong learners, creatives, and, well… marketers in Saskatchewan who love wild ideas! 😉

2. “Everything is more random than you think.”

Life isn’t a plan, it’s a probability cloud.

It might feel like the universe has it out for you, but trust me: the universe isn’t targeting anyone. It’s not mad. It’s not kind. It’s indifferent.

Bad things happen; that’s just the scatterplot of life. But if you understand regression to the mean, there’s comfort in knowing that what goes down eventually drifts back up.
Chaos isn’t personal. It’s just math.

  • Life is random; loosen your grip. Control freaks, perfectionists, micromanageers, take a seat.
  • It’s oddly freeing—like Montaigne would say, “I don’t know” is a wise stance.
  • Richard Branson’s 7 most powerful words a leader can say “I’m not sure, what do you think?”

GHOSTS DON'T LEAVE UNTIL YOU'VE UNDERSTOOD THEIR MESSAGE.

3. “Ghosts don’t leave until you understand their message.”

Pain lingers until it teaches.

  • Trauma, heartbreak, failure—they don’t vanish with time. They vanish with meaning.
  • This is therapy disguised as wisdom.
  • Failure is rarely failure; it’s a necessary step on the way to success.
  • You can turn this into a life mantra: “What’s the lesson this ghost is whispering?”

4. “Problems persist until you claim them and solve them. Face them directly and they’ll disappear.”

Problems thrive in avoidance. That’s why you have a problem. Face it, claim it, solve it. Then you no longer have a problem.

  • The procrastination monster feeds on fear.
  • Sivers gives us a dare: claim it, name it, crush it.
  • What you resist, persists.

Expecting life to be wonderful is disappointing

5. “Expecting life to be wonderful is disappointing. Expecting life to be disappointing is wonderful.”

expect disappointment

Gratitude hides inside low expectations. Now I know you immediately went to the MJ quote from Spiderman, “Expect disappointment…” but that makes it seem negative. It’s more of a Stoic principle of preparing for the worst, so you won’t be blindsided. AND once you are prepared for the worst, literally ANYTHING that happens will be better!

  • This one flips modern “positivity” culture on its head. And it works.
  • Go in expecting things to suck, and be blown away when things don’t.
  • Delight is a surprise party for your soul.

6. “What would a caveman say about a glass half full of water?”

Perspective is everything. Change your attitude and it’ll change your outlook on life.

  • A caveman wouldn’t argue optimism vs. pessimism. He’d be like, “Water! DRINK!!”
  • It’s an invitation to unlearn and reconnect with your primal roots with gratitude.
  • Reframing a situation can provide a better perspective.

Your biggest enemy is insatiability

7. “Your biggest enemy is insatiability.”

Desire is a treadmill, and you can’t stop running.

  • That constant hunger? It’s not hunger. It’s a loop. Don’t buy in.
  • When you can say “this is enough,” you’ve won a secret level of the game.
  • When you can say “I have enough,” you’ve unlocked the next level of living.

The Stratlab team has been fantastic. In the last 2 years Stratlab has helped us to overhaul our website. I am not a tech person, but in working with Carter, Dustin, or Brandon, bit-by-bit we've been able to revolutionize our Events Guide from what it previously was. With pretty much every idea I've had, some I didn't even know if they were technically possible, these wizards have found a way to make them happen. They are also usually super quick to make requested changes or fix any weirdness that may arise. We've had one of the best-looking and most user-friendy tourism Events Guides in the country that even our residents are getting excited about using! You can tell these guys are passionate about their work and care about getting their customers exactly what they need & want. I'm sad that I'll no longer be working with this crew due to transitioning to another department at work, but I highly recommend the Strat Lab team for any web design project 👍👍

I recently had the privilege of working with Brandon at StratLab, and the quality of his work is truly next‑level. After one quick call to share my vision for a bat demo video, he understood exactly what I needed, and delivered something far beyond what I imagined. His attention to detail, creative precision, and top‑tier expertise show what real professionalism looks like. Every frame, every transition, every moment was crafted with intention. He respected timelines, communicated clearly, and made the entire process effortless. I can only hope to work with Brandon again.
