In Content Writing, two standout strategies for content creation and website authority building are Topical Authority and Skyscraper Content. Both approaches aim to enhance a site’s visibility and ranking on search engines, but they differ significantly in methodology and focus. Let’s dive into each strategy’s nuances, benefits, and which might be best suited for your SEO efforts.

Topical Authority

Building Expertise and Authority

Topical Authority focuses on establishing a website as a leading source of information on a specific topic or set of related topics. This strategy involves creating comprehensive, high-quality content that covers a topic thoroughly, thereby signaling to search engines that your site possesses a high level of expertise and relevance in your domain.

The goal is To be perceived as the go-to place for information on a particular subject.

which is achieved by systematically organizing content into silos or clusters that cover all facets of the topic in depth.

To build Topical Authority, one must start by defining the core themes or topics of their website and then create content silos around these themes.

Each silo contains related and relevant content that supports the main topic, improving the site’s SEO by enhancing its structure and making it easier for search engines to understand the website’s focus areas.

This method demands a strategic selection of keywords, meticulous planning of content that addresses various aspects of the topic, and a commitment to producing quality content that adds value to the audience.

Skyscraper Content

Reaching New Heights Organically

Skyscraper Content, on the other hand, is a technique that involves finding content within your niche that has already performed well (in terms of engagement, shares, and backlinks) and then creating something better.

This strategy involves thorough research to identify successful content, understanding what makes it appealing, and then producing a more comprehensive, updated, and valuable piece of content.

The aim is to produce a piece so compelling that it naturally attracts links and shares, thus improving your site’s authority and search rankings.

The workflow for creating Skyscraper Content involves identifying trending topics, conducting competitor analysis to find content gaps or opportunities for improvement, and then creating content that is not just slightly better but significantly superior in-depth, quality, and presentation.

This approach not only helps in acquiring backlinks but also in establishing thought leadership and credibility in your niche.

Which Strategy to Choose?

Topical authority or Skyscraper Content

Choosing between Topical Authority and Skyscraper Content depends on your SEO goals, resources, and the current state of your website’s content and authority.

If you aim to build long-term credibility and become a recognized authority in a specific field, focusing on Topical Authority might be the way to go.

This strategy is particularly effective for websites that aim to cover a broad subject area comprehensively or for businesses that want to dominate a niche market.

On the other hand, if your goal is to quickly gain visibility, improve rankings, and attract backlinks through standout content pieces, the Skyscraper Content technique may be more appropriate.

This method can be particularly useful for websites looking to make a significant impact in a short time frame or those looking to improve their standing in competitive niches.

The Stratlab team has been fantastic. In the last 2 years Stratlab has helped us to overhaul our website. I am not a tech person, but in working with Carter, Dustin, or Brandon, bit-by-bit we've been able to revolutionize our Events Guide from what it previously was. With pretty much every idea I've had, some I didn't even know if they were technically possible, these wizards have found a way to make them happen. They are also usually super quick to make requested changes or fix any weirdness that may arise. We've had one of the best-looking and most user-friendy tourism Events Guides in the country that even our residents are getting excited about using! You can tell these guys are passionate about their work and care about getting their customers exactly what they need & want. I'm sad that I'll no longer be working with this crew due to transitioning to another department at work, but I highly recommend the Strat Lab team for any web design project 👍👍

I recently had the privilege of working with Brandon at StratLab, and the quality of his work is truly next‑level. After one quick call to share my vision for a bat demo video, he understood exactly what I needed, and delivered something far beyond what I imagined. His attention to detail, creative precision, and top‑tier expertise show what real professionalism looks like. Every frame, every transition, every moment was crafted with intention. He respected timelines, communicated clearly, and made the entire process effortless. I can only hope to work with Brandon again.
