Usually the Tim Ferriss Podcast is great for business tips and tricks. This episode had me reflecting on how I am as a Dad. Jake has a couple tricks that he shares that are pretty incredible. Now putting them into practice is the hard part!

I always like a Tim Ferriss podcast, but this one was special. I don’t write about how they hunt the Axis Deer at Maui Nui or how they’re literally saving the Hawaiian landscape from this invasive species. Nope, I don’t talk about how intense the hunt is, in the middle of the night, sometimes sprinting to beat the clock. You’ll have to listen to the podcast to get that story. I love this quote from Jake:

“We’re asking our team members to be snipers, rally car drivers, CrossFit athletes, butchers. The people we have on our teams just have these extraordinary skill sets. It’s the funnest thing to watch a guy in his first week.”

The Secret Pinterest Board

Jake’s got a parenting philosophy that’s as tricky as a secret Pinterest board. He keeps it hush-hush, just between him and his wife. You see, when Jake’s scratching his head, clueless about what to buy her as a gift, he sneaks a peek at their covert Pinterest stash. Bam! Instantly, he becomes the gift-giving guru and their relationship gets an upgrade.

But here’s the catch: this parenting wisdom is like a classified government document. If their kids, parents, or friends find out, it loses its coolness factor. So, they keep it under wraps from everyone! They put on a show when they unwrap presents, keeping the illusion alive. It’s a genius trick, really.

80 Year Old Crying Grandma

And then there’s the legendary tale of the 80-year-old sobbing ladies. When their kids are driving them bonkers, they pull a stunt that would make Oscar-worthy actors proud. They plunk themselves down, hands covering their faces, and transform into elderly folks. Complete with tears and all! They ask themselves, “Would I trade this chaotic moment for being 80?” Talk about a perspective shift.

Realizing that youth is fleeting and time is precious, their attitude does a 180. Suddenly, they’re not yelling as much, letting the kids frolic a little longer, and even dishing out treats before bedtime. Because, hey, before you know it, those kiddos won’t be so little anymore. They’ll be fully grown adults, ready to take on the world.

Parenting: the tug-of-war you’re going to lose

And here’s where the tug of war comes into play. Jake compares parenting to an epic tug of war battle. But listen up, folks, it’s a game you’re destined to lose! Winning means sheltering your kids from life’s challenges, and that’s a big no-no. The goal isn’t to keep them safe in your cozy bubble; it’s to make them tough as nails, ready to conquer whatever the world throws their way.

So, loosen your grip on that rope of control and let them face obstacles head-on. Guide them, support them, but let them experience the ups and downs of life. Because if you win this tug of war, well, your kids might end up as clueless as a fish out of water when they step into the real world. And that’s a hilarious disaster waiting to happen!
