Remember The Titans

1. Remember the Titans – Doing the impossible through adversity.

This was the first movie I bought on DVD. I love the storyline of an underdog coach and team doing the impossible. I love the subtle learning about Racism, and what it was like back in the day trying to run a football team.

The shot of the students showing up at school on their first day of a mixed school puts into perspective what racism was like back then. How horrible it was. The team had to overcome their internal racial fighting to become the team they were destined to be.

Left side, STRONG SIDE, LEFT SIDE, STRONG SIDE!

-Julius and Gerry

The daughter of Coach Yoast plays a pivotal role in what we learn about his character. The moment when he’s asked to throw a game to be part of the Hall of Fame still. But he doesn’t. He defies orders and teaches his daughter an important lesson. Your moral compass is far more important than any awards you’re going to win.

The moment when Sunshine kisses Julius, we learn there’s a lot of different emotions going on for a high school student. How the team deals with it was pretty cool. They supported him. It helped that he was an incredible quarterback too!

There’s also the moment when their star player, Gerry Bertier gets in an accident and they have to play without him. Just because your star isn’t there doesn’t mean you can’t compete.

I still smile thinking about Remember The Titans. Their entry song into stadiums we stole in high school volleyball and would chant, “Everywhere we go, people want to know, who we are, so we tell them, we are the Wolverines, the mighty mighty Wolverines! OOOOW, AAAAAH, C’MON!”

Yes Man

2. Yes Man – The secret to life is to say “yes!”.

Say it a million times, say it a million more. Then you’ll have said it two million times! -Terrence

I’ve had to watch this movie several times over. Every time it makes me smile. The idea of opening yourself up to opportunity but saying “yes” isn’t a new concept, but the way Jim Carey plays the role is hard not to fall in love with the attitude.

Try it. Next time you’re uneasy about an ask, or a friend invites you to something you normally say “no” to. Watch what happens. When we’re put into uncomfortable situations, we grow, we learn, we adapt. That’s what life is all about.

If you don’t say yes, you’ll find yourself getting stuck in rut after rut as nothing can bring you out of your miserable existence, you think you can ease your way out of it but you can’t. If we avoid uncomfortable situations you aren’t going to grow as fast as those people leaning into the unknown, being uncomfortable, and realizing it ain’t that bad.

What are you scared of? Say yes, and the next time it won’t be as scary.

The Pursuit of Happiness

3. The Pursuit of Happiness – “What would you say if a guy walked in for an interview without a shirt on, and I hired him?”

Chris’s response: “He must have had on some really nice pants”.

This movie I bring up in more presentations than any other movie I think. The moment when Chris (played by Will Smith) has to sleep overnight in a subway bathroom while a security guard is banging on the door. He has to lie to his kid to tell him it’s going to be okay. I think this is the moment he’s at rock-bottom. But that’s okay because there’s only up to go from there.

He works his ass off and finally gets the success he always dreamed of. It’s a true story, maybe over-dramatized a bit but I still love the storyline of someone who never gave up, who worked and worked and worked to get what they wanted.

I love this quote in the moment Chris is telling his son:

Don’t ever let someone tell you, you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you got to protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they want to tell you you can’t do it.
-Chris Gardner
patch adams

4. Patch Adams – “The most radical act anyone can commit is to be happy.”

Life can be and should be fun. No matter what profession you are in, you can still be human. Patch is famous for not only treating the disease but the patient as well. I loved this movie so much and was inspired by Patch’s attitude and wanted a constant reminder of it, my son’s middle name is also Patch.

You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you, you’ll win, no matter what the outcome.

-Hunter Patch Adams

The movie isn’t all rainbows and unicorns though. Patch loses his girlfriend at the time to a man they were supporting at their clinic. The way he deals with one of the hardest of setbacks is inspiring.

We can all learn something from Patch.

“When I was a girl I would look out my bedroom window at the caterpillars; I envied them so much. No matter what they were before, no matter what happened to them, they could just hide away and turn into these beautiful creatures that could fly away completely untouched.”

-Corrine Fisher

A Beautiful Mind

5. A Beautiful Mind – The mind is incredibly powerful.

The story of John Nash is nothing short of incredible. I loved this movie for the hope it gives all of us. Our minds are powerful and wonderful, yet sometimes detrimental to our achieving success in life.

Professor Nash was awarded a Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on game theory while a Graduate student at Princeton University was also famous for living with schizophrenia. A Beautiful Mind is the story of someone who struggled in some parts of his life but very excelled in an extreme manner in others. He was a savant with an estimated IQ of 175.

There are more John Nash’s out there, people who don’t fit the mould, who struggle daily but also have something beautiful to offer the world. This movie gives you hope, specifically for those who struggle with mental illness. You aren’t alone.

Shawshank Redemption

6. Shawshank Redemption – Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’. -Andy

I’ve watched this one many times over, and it never gets old. I think the lesson I took away from this was no matter what you’re going through, no matter how bad your situation is, there’s always something you can dream up to look forward to. It’s those who don’t dream that have a hard time dealing with bad circumstances.

What’s your Zihuatanejo?

Start living.

What quite possibly is the greatest ending to a movie, Red shows up to find Andy working on his boat, happy as a clam in Zihuatanejo. It’s the perfect ending. They finally get their peace.

What’s your thing going to be?

Forest Gump

7. Forest Gump – Life is like a box of chocolates.

I remember watching this in the theatre, it was like nothing I’d ever seen before. I laughed, cried, and left the theatre a different person. It’s hard not to be inspired by the story of Forest Gump.

So many classic saying came from this movie.

Nacho Libre

8. Nacho Libre – Chacho, sometimes grown-ups need to wear stretchy pants.

It doesn’t matter where you come from, if you believe in yourself and your talents, you will be successful. A fictitious story no doubt but an inspiring one nonetheless. Nacho wants to be a famous wrestler, but he’s stuck serving in the convent. By all measures he does not fit in there, but he also teachers their leadership an important lesson. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

Nacho becomes the wrestler that he always dreamed of, giving us hope that we still too can become something that we always dreamed about.

Cool Runnings

9. Cool Runnings – I see pride, I see power, I see a badass mother who don’t take no crap off of no one!

The classic underdog story, Cool Running, is based on a true story about the 1988 Jamaican Bobsled team. It helps that John Candy plays the irritable coach of this ragtag group of sprinters turned Bobsled athletes.

Anything is possible, if you believe it is. That’s something Doris Banic would say.

Moneyball

10. Moneyball – Just because it’s always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it’s right.

I’ve written about why I love this movie and the lessons within before here, What Billy Beane Can Teach Us About Innovation.

This movie (and before that a Michael Lewis classic) was the analogy of what we at StratLab were doing to the marketing industry. Using measurement to make better decisions. Using strategy and statistics (the right ones), the real-life story of Paul DePodesta (played by Jonah Hill in the movie) tells the story of how he used analytics to change the game of baseball forever.

If you challenge conventional wisdom, you will find ways to do things much better than they are currently done.

-Bill James

It’s an inspiring movie, one I can watch again and again. Whether it be his daughter singing to him, why he never watches games in the park, or how he teaches a team of misfits “what the sound of losing sounds like”. It all makes for one of the best sports movies ever made.
