Note: Your site may not currently not use the built-in Blog feature, but this feature can be enabled at any time if you want to start writing! (it’s good for your SEO) Several tips in this section also apply to updating text on pages.
All of your blog posts are located under the Posts tab in the admin dashboard.
To create a new blog post, visit the Posts tab and click Add New at the top of the page. This will take you to the Post Editor.
Title & URL: Type the title of your post in the Title field at the top of the page. A URL slug will be created based on the title you select, which can optionally be changed later.
Note: Do not click the Advanced Layout Editor button or the post formatting will be broken.
Post Body: Below the title is the post body. You can write and format your blog post here using the formatting options across the top. You can also insert images in the post body by clicking on the Add Media button.
Note: If you are copying and pasting content from another website you may accidentally copy over markups and unwanted styling code from the other site. To avoid this, click on the Text tab in the top right corner of the text editor and paste it there as plain text, then switch back to the Visual tab.
Adding Links: To add a hyperlink to a piece of text, highlight that text and click on the link icon to create a link field, then paste the URL you want to link to in that field.
When linking to a PDF or an external website, make sure to click the Link options gear and check the Open Link in New Tab checkbox so the user isn’t taken away from your site when they click it.
Featured Image: The featured image will be used as the post’s thumbnail and appear at the top of the post page. To set a featured image, click “Set featured image” in the right sidebar and select a picture from the Media Library or upload a new one.
Post Formats: The post format options are used to alter the layout of the post to best suit the type of media included. Useful post formats are described below:
- Standard – Default format, the featured image will be cropped to a banner shape.
- Link – To link to an article on an external website, set the format to Link and paste the link you wish to send the user to in the body. This will send the user to that link when they click on the post title.
- Video – If you set the format to Video, you can paste the link to a video on YouTube or another common video hosting site, and the featured image on the page will be replaced with an embedded video player.
- Image – If the format is set to Image, the featured image will be displayed without cropping at full width and height with the body content below.
Yoast SEO: To get the most out of your blog posts, you can use the powerful Yoast SEO tools below the text editor. In the Readability analysis tab, Yoast will proof-read your articles for you and provide suggestions on ways to improve it. From transition words to sentence length, passive voice analysis and Flesch Reading Ease score, Yoast is an invaluable writing assistant.
Publishing Posts: Finally, you can publish your post by clicking the blue Publish button in the top right corner. If you want to save your work and come back to publish it later, you can click Save Draft instead.
