These are all questions you should be asking yourself before a competitor or a sneaky friend of yours finds those pictures of you from that Halloween party in University. How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big- Kind of the Story of My Life-book by Scott AdamsYou probably know Mr. Adams a lot better once you find out he’s the guy behind those Dilbert comic strips. Yup, that’s Scott.

Throughout this fascinating read he keeps reminding the reader not to listen to his advice, after all he says, “you’re taking advice from a cartoonist!” I think this is why I felt like I should listen to him more, because he was open with his inherent bias’s and extremely transparent. Still one of the best all around books on improving your life, career, business, and most importantly, mindset.

Goals are for losers, systems are for winners. He had a lot of great advice in the book, but this counterintuitive thinking jumped out at me. As a guy who’s always been a firm believer in goals, goal setting, writing down goals, etc. this statement of Goals are for losers! really caught me off guard.

What the hell have I been doing? Why am I setting goals? Am I a loser?!? 

Then you read on and find there is a method to his madness. The general argument is that goals, once completed, give you nowhere else to go, no next step, no contingency plan. But systems scale, they get larger with ease, they adjust to their surroundings, they’re more adept for growth. Your system is the way you create successful outcomes (if you aren’t creating successful outcomes you are probably using a bad system). Your style, personality, approach, tone of voice, attitude, etc. are all a part of your system.

Sometimes You Just Have To Be Like Harry Potter

In Harry Potter The Prisoner of Azkaban, there’s a scene at the lake where dementors are about to kill Harry, Hermoine and Sirious Black. There are too many dementors for Harry to defend against.

Just when you think all is lost, all of a sudden a Patronus appears from the other side of the lake and staves off the dementors.

Harry believes it’s his father who cast the Patronus charm and saved them.

Some time later in the movie, using Hermione’s time-turner to go back in time, they go back to the lake where supposedly Harry’s father saves them. But what they find is Harry’s father doesn’t show up. So who saved them?

It must have been Harry. But he wasn’t powerful enough, or so he thought.

He didn’t think he had the power to do it, but because he’d already seen himself do it, it wasn’t impossible anymore.

Visualizing, affirming, positive self talk, there are many ways to help yourself do this in your marketing, business and life. Sometimes you must believe in yourself to do the impossible, otherwise how else are you going to achieve your goals? Just like Harry did.

How many major moments in your life would have been much easier if you would have saw yourself doing it perfectly in advance?

Strategy Lab and Based in Business

On Wednesday, August 14th, we had the opportunity to take part in a program dedicated to creating entrepreneurial opportunities for discharged and retired Canadian Forces members. The program, entitled Based in Business, works with the Memorial University Enactus Group to execute a year-long, three-phased program that teaches participants everything they need to know about owning and running their own business.

We were invited into the marketing phase of the program being held at the University of Regina. Along with Lee Elliot, I (Linden) was able to share insights into the rapidly changing marketing world.

Video Is The Future And These Regina Kids Are Beating You At It

An article by FastCompany, already a year old, claims that short-form video is the future of marketing. Well, the future is now and it’s plain to see that FC was dead on.
YouTube is the internet’s second most popular search engine (behind Google), Vine is this year’s fastest growing app, and Instagram followed suit with the addition of video mere weeks after Vine’s explosion.

The Fast Company article cites 5 main reasons for video becoming the dominant medium:
1. More and more users are consuming video entertainment online.
2. Marketers are using video to engage social media audiences.
3. Barriers to entry are low.
4. Quality is rapidly improving.
5. There are plenty of avenues for videos to spread.

Wondering what this means for you and how you should go about doing video? Start off by seeing how effective a simple and bare bones video can be by checking out Gary Vaynerchuk’s YouTube Channel.

Then, take a look at some local talent who have been absolutely crushing it with dynamic video content:

1. Chris Dimas – Drummer – 16 Years Old

2. Alex McIntosh and Matt Stefan – Students – 20 Years Old

What makes these videos so successful? Here’s what I think:

Both of the above videos reside at the intersection of the creators’ strengths and what is relevant. In Chris’s case, his strength is his high energy and skillful drumming and the relevance is that he uses popular music in his videos. For Matt and Alex, their strengths are sense of humour and comedic timing and the relevance of their video lies in the fact that levelling was partially a spoof on the planking craze and exemplified what most people are looking for on YouTube: a good laugh. This concept is illustrated below:

The Top 100 Most Influential People on Twitter in Regina [Infographic]

Twitter birds RTingHave you ever wondered who the most influential people on Twitter in Regina are? I have, lots, I compiled a list of people to follow a while ago but it was a list I came up with myself (pretty, pretty, pretty, biased). The list below was created using Followerwonk An awesome tool from the goodlookin’ folks at Moz.

In Followerwonk you can search peoples’ bios, location, and much, more. For this infographic, I searched for all the people on Twitter with ‘Regina’ listed as their location. There were just over 21,000 results. Below are the top 100 people ranked by Social Authority. Social Authority is made up of three main parts, you can read more about it here and here.

The definition of Social Authority from MOZ:

  1. The retweet rate of a few hundred of the measured user’s last non-@mention tweets
  2. A time decay to favor recent activity versus ancient history
  3. Other data for each user (such as follower count, friend count, and so on) that are optimized via a regression model trained to retweet rate

Below you’ll also find three columns on the right that provide each individuals % Tweets w/ @contacts (a measure of how engaging you are), % Tweets w/ URLs (a measure of what you share) and % Retweets in your Timeline (a measure of how active you are). If you want a further explanation of what % Tweets w/ @contacts, % Tweets w/ URLs, and % Retweets in Timeline, see this post from the Moz on the new engagement metrics for Twitter. If Tweeter doesn’t have these values beside their name, it’s because Moz didn’t register the number, either inadequate information or not enough Tweet volume.

20 of the Most Difficult “Regina” Keyword Searches in Google [Top 10 Google SERP included]

Google logoYour search results are wrong. Well not exactly, but kind of. Google personalizes your search results based on your search history and location. To get a true look at the top search results in Google you have to turn off your cookies or use a service like Moz (the company we use).

Before we get into the 20 top Regina keyword searches we need to define a few terms for you.

Domain Authority

From Moz (formerly known as SEO Moz):Domain Authority represents Moz’s best prediction for how a website will perform in search engine rankings.”

  • Based on 40 different signals Moz measures, including linking root domains, number of total links, MozRank, MozTrust, etc.
  • It’s a logarithmic scale so going from 10 to 20 is significantly easier than going from 60 to 70.
  • It’s a relative measurement for predicting Google search results. It’s better to compare Domain Authority to other websites than simply using it to track a single websites’ success.

Page Authority

From Moz:Page Authority is Moz’s calculated metric for how well a given webpage is likely to rank in Google.com’s search results.”

  • Based on 100 measured variables Moz tracks
  • Also a logarithmic scale, going from 10 to 20 will be easier than going from 50 to 60.
  • Page Authority differs from Domain authority as the former measures how well a single page will rank in Google and the later predicts the overall performance of your website in Google.

External Linking Domains

External Linking Domain are hyperlinks on websites pointing back towards your website.

  • Top SEOs believe that external links are the most important source of Google ranking power.
  • Links to your website act as votes to search engines. The more votes you get, the more valuable your website appears to Google

Here are 20 of the most difficult “Regina” keywords to rank for in Google. It’s interesting to compare these keywords to the same for Vancouver, San Francisco and Palo Alto. It’s obviously not as difficult to rank here in Regina, but looking at other centres to see what the future of search engine optimization holds is always a good idea.
